What We Believe

The following list contains some of our core beliefs and is not intended to be exhaustive in scope. The consciousness we have of our Holy God and Creator compels us to believe and follow these doctrines. Our conscious compels us to believe and live not only the following doctrine, but all that is contained in the Holy Bible. These doctrines are derived from the Holy Scriptures, God's Holy Word.

BIBLE

We believe the Bible to be the revealed Word of God, fully and verbally inspired of God. We believe the Scriptures to be the inerrant, infallible Word of God, as found within the 66 books from Genesis to Revelation. We believe that God not only inspired every word, but that He has preserved them through the ages.

We believe that the Bible is the final authority for us in all matters of faith, doctrine, and practice. We believe that Christians should not only believe the Bible, but also do what it commands and teaches.

There are many versions today that are translated from unreliable manuscripts and therefore cannot be trusted. We believe that God's Word should not be compromised; therefore, we believe that the King James Version is the preserved Word of God for the English-speaking people. By this conviction, we have established this to be the only version of the Bible for preaching and teaching at Basehor Baptist Church. All who preach or teach must use this version of the Bible. (Psalm 12:6–7; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Peter 1:23-25; 2 Peter 1:19-21; James 1:22-25; 2 Peter 1:21)

GOD

We know that there is but one true and living God, existing eternally and manifesting Himself to us in three divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Who are equal in every divine perfection and execute distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption. (Genesis 1:26; Isaiah 45:21-22; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30; 14:10, 26; 15:26; I John 5:7)

JESUS CHRIST

We believe Jesus Christ to be the one and only Savior of mankind. We believe Jesus Christ to be eternally God and to possess all the attributes of Deity. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was virgin-born, that He was God incarnate, and that the purposes of the incarnation were to reveal God, to redeem men, and to rule over God's kingdom. We believe Jesus Christ never relinquished any attributes of His Deity, but merely veiled them. We believe He lived a perfect, sinless life, at the end of which He was offered for all mankind as a substitutionary sacrifice for man's sin. This sacrifice was a just payment to God for His forgiveness of sin. It was activated by His death through the shedding of His blood on the cross and was accepted by God upon His resurrection.

We believe He ascended into Heaven after His resurrection to be seated at the right hand of the Father and is now waiting for the time of receiving His church at the rapture, which is followed by His return seven years later to earth to rule and reign as King for 1,000 years. (Psalm 2:7-9; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6, 43:11; Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:25; Luke 1:26-35; John 1:1, 1:3, 14, 18, 29; Romans 3:19-25; Romans 5:6-15; Philippians 2:5-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Timothy 2:5; 1 Timothy 3:16; Titus 2:10-15; Hebrews 7:26, 9:24-28; 1 Peter 1:19, 2:2; 1 John 1:3; Revelation 20:1-6)

HOLY SPIRIT

We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, converts the repentant sinner and places him into Christ, seals the believer, interprets the Scripture, and endues God’s children with power to be bold witnesses.

We believe the Holy Spirit of God is a person who has personality and all the attributes of Deity. We believe the Holy Spirit has always been involved in the affairs of mankind; however, we believe He has a special ministry that began at Pentecost and will continue until the rapture. This ministry includes reproving the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Holy Spirit was also sent to regenerate, sanctify, seal, and fill all who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. (Genesis 1:2; John 3:5-6; John 14:16; Acts 1:5; Acts 11:15; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 1 Corinthians 12:13; John 16:8-11; John 3:5-6; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14; 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14)

SIN AND SALVATION

Sin:

Man was created in the image and likeness of God, but in Adam’s sin the human race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; therefore, all men are sinners by birth and by choice and are of themselves utterly unable to remedy their lost condition. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:22-23; 5:12; 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3; 4:17-19)

Salvation:

We believe the only hope of deliverance for man is a total change of mind concerning his sinful condition and inability to change it, and a turning to Jesus Christ as the only Saviour. We believe that only through the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ on the cross can a man be delivered from his sin.

Salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace. It is received by repentance toward God and by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ Who shed His precious blood on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins. We believe that to be saved, sinners must be born again, and that the new birth is instantaneous and not a process. (John 1:12; Acts 20:21; Romans 10:9-13; Ephesians 1:7; 2:8-10; 1 Peter 1:18-19)

We also believe that all those who reject Jesus Christ as their Savior are already condemned to an eternity in the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:11-14)

NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH

We believe that the church began with the calling out of the twelve apostles by Jesus Christ and was empowered on the day of Pentecost. We believe that a New Testament church is a congregation or assembly of baptized believers, associated together by a covenant of faith, based solely upon the Word of God. The officers are pastors and deacons, and the Scriptural ordinances are water baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We believe in the autonomy of the local church, free from any external authority or control. We believe the mission of the church is to win the lost, baptize them, and teach and instruct them in the Word of God so that they too will win the lost. (Matthew 18:15-20; 28:19-20; Acts 2:41-42; 6:1-7; 1 Corinthians 11:20-34; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; 2 Timothy 2:2)

END TIMES

There is a plethora of information in the Bible concerning the end times. Prophecy regarding the end times in woven throughout the Bible. Organizing all these prophecies can be difficult. Below is a systematic summation of end time events.

Christ will remove His bride, the church, from the earth in an event known as the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-54). At the judgment seat of Christ these believers will be rewarded for good works and faithful service during their time on earth or will lose rewards for lack of service and obedience, but will not lose eternal life (1 Corinthians 3:11-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10).

The Antichrist (the beast) will come into power and will sign a covenant with Israel for seven years (Daniel 9:27). This seven-year period is known as the “tribulation.” During the tribulation, there will be terrible wars, famines, plagues, and natural disasters. God will be pouring out His wrath against sin, evil, and wickedness. The tribulation will include the appearance of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, and the seven seal, trumpet, and bowl judgments.

About halfway through the seven years, the Antichrist will break the peace covenant with Israel and make war against it. The Antichrist will commit “the abomination of desolation” and set up an image of himself to be worshiped in the Jerusalem temple (Daniel 9:27; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-10), which will have been rebuilt. The second half of the tribulation is known as “the great tribulation” (Revelation 7:14) and “the time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7).

At the end of the seven-year tribulation, the Antichrist will launch a final attack on Jerusalem, culminating in the battle of Armageddon. Jesus Christ will return, destroy the Antichrist and his armies, and cast them into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:11-21). Christ will then bind Satan in the abyss for 1,000 years, and He will institute His earthly kingdom known as the millennial reign of Christ (Revelation 20:1-6).

At the end of the thousand years, Satan will be released, defeated again, and then cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:7-10) for eternity. Christ then judges all unbelievers (Revelation 20:10-15) at the great white throne judgment, casting them all into the lake of fire. Christ will then usher in a new heaven and new earth and the New Jerusalem, the eternal dwelling place of believers. There will be no more sin, sorrow, or death (Revelation 21–22).

SEPARATION

The Biblical doctrine of separation encompasses three areas of influence:

1. The separation of the local church from all affiliation and fellowship with those who deny the verities of the "faith which was once delivered to the saints."

2 The separation of the individual believer from all worldly practices that may dishonor the Savior. God commands His people to separate from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices, and associations.

3. The separation of the world’s system. We are to "obey God rather than men.” The only time Christians don't follow governmental authority is when those authorities lead us to disobey God.

(Romans 12:1-2; 14:13; 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 1 John 2:15-17; 2 John 9-11; Leviticus 19:28; Acts 5:29; Corinthians 6:14-7:1; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14, 15; Jude 3)

CREATION

We believe that God created the universe in six literal, 24-hour periods. We reject evolution, the gap theory, the day-age theory, theistic evolution, and intelligent design not attributed to God, as unscriptural theories of origin. We stand on the Genesis account of creation, and that it is to be accepted literally, and not allegorically or figuratively; that man was created directly in God’s own image and after His own likeness; that man’s creation was not a matter of evolution or evolutionary changes of species, or development through interminable periods of time from lower to higher forms; that all animal and vegetable life was made directly; and God established that they should bring forth only "after their kind." (Genesis 1:1; Exodus 20:11; John 1:3; Romans 1:20; Revelation 10:6; Genesis 1-2; Exodus 20:11)

CIVIL GOVERNMENT

We believe that God has ordained and created all authority consisting of three basic institutions: 1) the home, 2) the church, and 3) the state. Every person is subject to these authorities, but all (including the authorities themselves) are answerable to God and governed by His Word. God has given each institution specific Biblical responsibilities and balanced these responsibilities with the understanding that no institution has the right to infringe upon the other. The home, the church, and the state are equal and sovereign in their respective Biblically assigned spheres of responsibility under God. (Romans 13:1-7; Ephesians 5:22-24; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 2:13-14)

BAPTISM AND THE LORD’S SUPPER

We believe that salvation must precede water baptism. We believe that Scriptural baptism is the immersion in water of a believer, in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost under the authority of the local church. It is to picture, in a solemn and beautiful emblem, our faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Savior, showing forth our death to sin and resurrection to a new life. Salvation and baptism are prerequisite to the privilege of church membership. The Lord’s Supper is an ordinance in which members of the church, by the sacred use of unleavened bread and the unfermented fruit of the vine, are to commemorate the love of Christ shown at Calvary. This ordinance should always be preceded by solemn self-examination, realizing that we are showing forth the Lord’s death till He comes. (Matthew 3:16; 28:19-20; John 3:23; Acts 2:41-42; 8:36-39; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 11:23-31; Colossians 2:12)

HUMAN SEXUALITY

We believe that God created humanity as distinctly and exclusively either male or female from the beginning, and that He blessed His created design as very good. We believe that every human’s true gender identity is identical to the genetic, biological sex with which they were born. We believe that God blesses submission to and acceptance of His created design. We believe God disapproves of and forbids any and all attempts to alter one’s gender through surgery, medicinal manipulation, appearance, or expression contrary to His created design. (Genesis 1:26-28, 31, 2:23-24; Matthew 19:4-6)

We believe that marriage is a sacred institution ordained by God, given to represent His love for the church, to continue the human race, and to bless humanity. We believe that the only legitimate marriage is the joining of one biological male and one biological female in a covenant commitment before God. (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:2, 10; Ephesians 5:22-33)

We believe that God has commanded that there should be no intimate sexual activity outside of a marriage between a biological male and a biological female. We believe that any relationships or activities involving homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, transgenderism, pedophilia, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, or pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. (Genesis 2:24, 19:5, 13; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-32; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4)

In keeping with our beliefs regarding the purpose of the church and regarding human sexuality, as expressed in this statement of faith, the Bible necessitates the following:

All people are welcome to attend our regular worship services, for we believe that all people need and deserve to hear the truth of the Gospel. We also believe that true healing can only come through the exposure of God's Holy Word. Those who attend may not display and promote behavior that demonstrates violations of the sinful behaviors listed in this section at any time on the church grounds or at church services or functions.

As we enforce the doctrinal position of this church, we shall not display overt disrespect for those who condone or display the sinful behaviors listed in this section. We truly LOVE everyone in Christ and want to offer Biblical solutions and healing for those who are seeking answers to their problems.

ABORTION

We believe that human life begins at conception and that the unborn child is a living human being. Abortion constitutes the unjustified, unexcused taking of unborn human life. Abortion is murder. (Job 3:16; Psalm 51:5; 139:14-16; Isaiah 44:24; 49:1, 5; Jeremiah 1:5; 20:15-18; Luke 1:44)

It is our biblical position that we seek to LOVE and help in any way we can those who have been victimized by unfortunate causes of conception. We believe God wants to heal the brokenness of such acts, and no matter the circumstance, He commands that the life of the unborn should take its natural course. We believe that, concerning the issue of abortion, God alone has authority to give and take life. (Jeremiah 29:11-13; Job 1:20-22; James 1:17; Romans 13:1-2; Ephesians 4:32)

LOVE

We believe that we should demonstrate love for others, not only toward fellow believers, but also toward both those who are unbelievers and those who oppose us. We are to deal with those who oppose us graciously, gently, patiently, and humbly. God forbids the stirring up of strife, the taking of revenge, or the threat or the use of violence as a means of resolving personal conflict or obtaining personal justice. Although God commands us to abhor sinful actions, we are to love and pray for any person who engages in such sinful actions. (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 5:44-48; Luke 6:31; John 13:34-35; Romans 12:9-10; 17-21; 13:8-10; Philippians 2:2-4; 2 Timothy 2:24-26; Titus 3:2; 1 John 3:17-18)

LAWSUITS BETWEEN BELIEVERS

We believe that Christians are prohibited from bringing civil lawsuits against other Christians or the church to resolve personal disputes. We believe the church possesses all the resources necessary to resolve personal disputes between members. We do believe, however, that a Christian may seek compensation for injuries from another Christian’s insurance company if the claim is pursued without malice or slander. (1 Corinthians 6:1-8; Ephesians 4:31-32)

MISSIONS

We believe that God has given the church a great commission to proclaim the Gospel to all nations so that there might be a great multitude from every nation, tribe, ethnic group, and language group who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the primary method of missions and evangelism is to plant new local Baptist churches all over the world as Paul did on his missionary journeys seen in the Acts.

As ambassadors of Christ, we must use all available means to go to the foreign nations and not wait for them to come to us. (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:46-48; John 20:21; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:20)

EUTHANASIA

We believe that the direct taking of an innocent human life is a moral evil, regardless of the intention. Life is a gift of God and must be respected from conception until natural death. Thus we believe that an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder contrary to the will of God. Everyone deserves to live out their life naturally and fully with the full complements of medical technology. (Exodus 20:13, 23:7; Matthew 5:21; Acts 17:28)

SATAN

Satan was once holy and enjoyed heavenly honors, but through pride and ambition to be as the Almighty, he fell and drew after him a host of angels. He is now the malignant prince of the power of the air, and the unholy god of this world. We hold him to be man’s great tempter, the enemy of God and Jesus Christ, the accuser of the brethren, and the author of all false religions. He is destined, however, to final defeat at the hands of God’s Son and the judgment of an eternal justice in the lake of fire, a place prepared for him and for his angels, as well as all of the unbelievers of the ages. (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:12-17; John 8:44; 2 Corinthians 4:4; 1 Peter 5:8-9; Revelation 12:9-10; 20:10).

HEAVEN AND HELL

The souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at the Rapture, when soul and body reunited shall be present forever with the Lord. We believe that the souls of unbelievers remain, after death, in conscious misery in hell until the Great White Throne Judgment at the close of the millennium. Then soul and body reunited shall be cast into the lake of fire, not to be annihilated, but to suffer everlasting torment. (Luke 16:19-26; 23:43; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9; Revelation 20:1-15)

BAPTIST DISTINCTIVES

These distinctives will help you understand why we are a Baptist church. Although independent Baptist churches have no affiliation with a denominational headquarters, we strongly affirm our commitment to biblical truth and to these distinctives that define our name. This simple acrostic helps to sum up the core distinctives of Baptists:

Biblical Authority in all matters of faith and practice. We believe the Bible is inspired and infallible and is the final authority. It is from God’s Word that we understand and teach the fundamental doctrines of our faith as well as pattern our church polity. (2 Timothy 3:16; John 17:17; Acts 17:11; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20–21.)

Autonomy or self-governing power of the local church. We believe that every local church should be independent of a hierarchical framework or outside governmental structure. (Colossians 1:18; Acts 13–14, 20:19–30; Ephesians 1:22–23.)

Priesthood of believers. God’s Word assures believers that we have direct access to God through our relationship with Christ. We believe and teach that the priesthood of the believer is the unspeakably precious privilege of every child of God. (Hebrews 4:14–16; 1 Timothy 2:5–6; 1 Peter 2:5–10.)

Two offices within the church. Scripture only mentions two church offices—pastor (also referred to as elder or bishop) and deacon. These two offices are to be filled by godly men of integrity in each local church. (Philippians 1:1; Acts 6:1–7; 1 Timothy 3:1–13; Titus 1:6–9; 1 Peter 5:1–4.)

Individual soul liberty. We believe that each person must make a personal decision of repentance and faith in Christ. (Romans 10:9–17, 14:1–23.)

Separation of church and state. The state should have no power to intervene in the free expression of religious liberty. (Matthew 22:21; Acts 5:29–31; Romans 13:1–4.)

Two ordinances—Baptism and the Lord’s Table (also called communion). These ordinances have no part in salvation and only serve as pictures of what Christ did for us. (Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26; Acts 2:38–43, 8:36–38; Romans 6:1–6)

Separation and personal holiness. We believe that Christ’s ultimate sacrifice demands our complete consecration, and we desire that our daily living would reflect the holiness of our great God. (2 Corinthians 6:14; 1 Peter 1:16.)

We are thankful to carry the name Baptist, and thankful for the privilege to share the Gospel of Christ and to teach others to build their lives on the inerrant foundation of God’s Word.
